A child's higher education is one of the biggest expenses a family faces, and it arrives on a fixed date. The good news: because you know the date, you can plan for it.
Start with the goal, then work backwards to the monthly amount. Not the other way round.
Step 1: Put a number on the goal
Pick a course and a college type, and note today's total cost, including fees, hostel and travel. Suppose it is ₹25 lakh today.
Step 2: Add inflation
Education fees tend to rise every year. At an assumed 10% a year, a ₹25 lakh course costs about ₹78 lakh after 12 years.
| Years left | Cost at 10% inflation |
|---|---|
| 5 | ₹40.3 lakh |
| 10 | ₹64.8 lakh |
| 12 | ₹78.5 lakh |
| 15 | ₹104.4 lakh |
Step 3: Work out the monthly SIP
If the money grows at an assumed 10% a year, building ₹78.5 lakh in 12 years needs a SIP of roughly ₹28,100 a month. Starting later means a much bigger monthly amount, because there is less time for compounding.
You can test your own figures in the education goal calculator.
Step 4: Match the investment to the time left
Use this as a general guide, and talk to an advisor about your situation:
- More than 7 years away: growth-oriented funds can make sense, accepting short-term ups and downs.
- 3 to 7 years away: begin moving gradually to lower-risk funds.
- Under 3 years away: protect what you have built; avoid taking big market risks.
Step 5: Review every year
Each year, check three things: whether fees have risen faster than expected, whether your income has grown (so you can step up the SIP), and whether the funds still suit the time left.
A simple formula to keep
The amount you need in the future is today's cost grown by inflation:
const futureCost = costToday * Math.pow(1 + inflation, years);
Everything else follows from that one line. For costToday = 2_500_000, inflation = 0.1 and years = 12, the result is about 78.5 lakh.
Things to avoid
- Waiting for the "right time" to start. Time in the market matters more than timing.
- Investing the whole education fund in one risky bet.
- Forgetting to mention the goal to your family, so everyone saves in the same direction.
Education goals are very personal, so if you would like help building a plan around yours, get in touch.
