The market is falling: what should you do?

A calm checklist for a falling market: what a fall means for your SIP, what not to do in a panic, and the three questions to ask yourself first.

By Gunasekaran Mookkan · · 3 min read

Values fall from time to time. It feels bad every time, and the news makes it feel worse. Before you do anything, read this page once, slowly.

A fall on the screen is only a loss when you sell. Selling is the one step you cannot undo.

First, what a fall does and does not mean

Fund values move up and down every day. A fall can last days, months or, sometimes, years. Nobody can tell you when it ends, and values can stay below what you put in for a long time. Past recovery is not a promise of future recovery.

What a fall does mean: the value of your units today is lower than before. What it does not mean: your money is gone. You only lose it when you sell at the low price.

What happens to your SIP in a fall

A SIP buys a fixed rupee amount every month, so it buys more units when the price is low and fewer when it is high. Here is only the arithmetic, with round numbers.

Price of one unit Your SIP of ₹5,000 buys
₹100 50 units
₹80 62.5 units

This does not guarantee a gain. It only shows that a lower price is not all bad news for someone who keeps investing, as long as the money is not needed soon.

Three questions before you act

  1. When do I need this money? If the goal is more than seven years away, you have time to wait. If it is under three years away, a fall is a real problem, and that is a reason to talk to someone, not to guess.
  2. Has my goal changed, or only the news? Sell because your plan changed, not because the headline did.
  3. Do I have an emergency fund? If you do not, a sudden bill can force you to sell at a bad time. Build that first.

What people regret most

  • Stopping the SIP in the middle of a fall. You skip the months that buy the most units.
  • Selling everything, then waiting for "the right time" to come back. Few people manage both moves well.
  • Checking the value every day. It raises worry and rarely changes what you should do.
  • Moving everything into one thing that "never falls". Every choice has a risk. It is just a different one.

A calm routine

  1. Do not check your values for a week.
  2. Write down your goal, the date you need the money and how much you can put in each month.
  3. Compare it with your last plan. If nothing in your life changed, the plan did not change either.
  4. If you are unsure, talk it through. The first call is free, with no pressure to invest.

What to remember

  1. A fall is part of how investing works. It is not a sign that something is broken.
  2. Stopping a SIP in a fall is a choice, and it has a cost.
  3. The right question is "has my goal changed?", not "what is the market doing today?".
